Another Mission Accomplished…Or Not

Big changes for Jack Bauer and company this week as FBI weeded out their moles and Jack finally managed to get his hands on Dubaku. Unfortunately, it looks as if all this is just the tip of the iceberg and there are shadier things afoot within the government, according to a brief appearance by Tony.

At FBI, Sean filled in Erika on the status of things, meaning they were the collective leak within the FBI, meaning that I was partially right about who the mole was. He explained that he put out the warrant for Jack and Renee, but Moss quickly nullified that little hangup and they were quickly released. They found themselves back on the chase, but as it turned out they were not the ones responsible for the final capture of Dubaku.

While Dubaku had harsh words with Marika, he still managed to convince her to join him, claiming he still loves her. She went, but soon enough she came to her senses and jumped into the front seat to grab the wheel, causing a pretty ugly car crash. Jack and Renee quickly got to the scene, shooting the driver and then making sure that they had Dubaku. Marika was unconscious and stuck in the car, which was on fire, so Jack told Renee to get away because the car was going to blow. When he insisted, Renee turned his gun on him and said she promised Marika and her sister that they would be alright, at which point Jack helped pull Marika from the car…barely seconds before the explosion…gotta love television and their dramatic sense of timing. While Jack secured Dubaku, Renee attempted CPR on Marika, but Marika was dead.

Once an ambulance arrived after a timely commercial interruption, Jack insisted that the paramedics wake up Dubaku so he could quickly interrogate him. It was really a waste of time, because it wasn’t until the paramedics attempted to use paddles on him that they realized he had a metal plate in him, which after a quick incision, turned out to be a flash drive of sorts.  Well I’ll be damned if this wasn’t quickly delivered to FBI where Chloe could properly analyze it and reveal everyone involved in this whole government scheme.

At the hospital, Bill filled in President Taylor on the dirty dirty about Dubaku, and told her she was no longer safe at the hospital and that she must return to the White House. There, she had a brief encounter with her daughter Olivia, where they avoided explicitly laying out their issues. Shot outa the cannon, I’m betting Olivia is gay and something like that could’ve tarnished President Taylor’s political career so they kept it on the d/l.

Back at FBI, Sean approached Erika about the information en route to FBI and explained that he needed her for some complicated job where they would crash the system when Chloe attempted to open the drive. Lucky for them, the drive could only be opened one time and then the information will be deleted from the drive. Man, this’ll be real easy. After Erika pulls it off, Sean pulls her in for a kiss, and then…shoots her? Yup, then shoots himself in the arm, so when Moss blows into the room, it looks like Sean’s the big hero. Man, this is going great for Sean…

But then Chloe manages to salvage the files from the drive, and when pressed on how she did it, she says, “Don’t ask,” because it’s probably impossible, but for plot purposes, she does it. Within minutes, Sean is caught by his own people, and it’s explained that the same is happening within other departments at this very moment. Isolating and eliminating the threats, awesome!

At the hospital, Jack and Renee have a dramatic argument over what happened with Marika. Renee is pissed because she promised that no harm would come to Marika, and Marika’s sister basically calling her a monster didn’t help her self-esteem. Jack maintains that what they did was necessary (man, Jack’s whole do what needs to be done and be totally serious about it, for some reason it’s becoming laughable).

Later, Jack is straight chilling on the steps of the Capitol by himself. Out of nowhere, Tony is sitting a few feet away on the steps, looking sharp in his aviators. Jack starts to give him crap about turning himself in, but Tony argues that this isn’t over, and the information he got from Emerson’s broskis leads him to believe that the day ain’t over, and that Juma, Dubaku’s boss still has some tricks up his sleeve, and that there’s already a target that Tony wasn’t sure of just yet. He gives Jack the name Burnett, who works directly under Senator Mayer (really? that’s the best they could do?), yup, that’s the senator from Jack’s court hearing (Red Forman). Tony tells Jack that if he’s in, meet him at some corner in DC (not quite sure why they can’t just continue their meeting…right there).

As for Burnett, we’ve seen this guy before. He met with Dubaku last episode if you recall. Well, Senator Mayer informs him that he’s been summoned to the White House to discuss Jack Bauer, and possibly pardoning him, and he wants Burnett there with him. Burnett agrees, but is a bit wary…looks like we just found out what that target is…
