Another Crisis Averted, But Nathan Petrelli Screws Over EVERYBODY!
Here it is, the “Villains” volume came to an end this week, and it was by no stretch short on the action. We watched some characters die, some scored sweet new powers, some got taken out of commission, and some just straight up backstabbed their own brother (Nathan, cough-cough). Quick update on where everybody is: Hiro is still trapped in the past, desperately in need of saving, but his entourage (Ando, Parkman, and Daphne) have a plan to steal the formula from Pinehearst, inject Ando and hope that he’ll somehow get a time-travelling ability (mind you, I lacked faith in this plan because there are no guarantees with abilities). After killing Daddy P over at Pinehearst, Sylar made his way to Primatech where he put the entire facility into lockdown, trapping Claire, Noah, Angela, and Meredith in their with him…Claire and Noah were packing shotguns, by the way. Now with Daddy P dead, Peter found himself deadset on stopping the formula from being used, which conflicted with Nathan’s opinion on the matter. And so, the stage is set…
After Peter and Nathan exchange some words over the dead body of their father (Peter: “Bro, using that formula is totally whack,” Nathan: “Dude…I completely disagree), they part ways, but Peter makes his way into the lab and starts trashing the place, much to the dismay of Mohinder. Fortunately, Flint and Knox showed up, realizing that if this formula is used, then their status as people with abilities makes them average, so they also decide to trash the place and become Peter’s thugs. Mohinder catches a pretty bad beating from them, and Knox then makes his way to Nathan’s office. Knox maintains the upper hand for a short time, but Nathan takes a shot at him with a glass ball sitting on the desk, and then Tracy shows up and finishes the job by freezing him. What I fail to understand about Nathan, is that his flying ability is probably more powerful than people give it credit for, he could use it for a pretty good short range attack (like he did to the Haitian’s brother), but he doesn’t recognize his own potential. Disappointing.
At Primatech, Sylar talks eerily over the speakers while Noah attempts to find him and somehow subdue him. Claire recalls from season 1 that there is a spot in the back of her head that if you jab something into it, she will shut down. Sylar has her power, so it should work the same way. With that, Claire splits off to keep Angela safe, while Noah and Meredith release some of the inmates, explaining that they’re all locked in Primatech together, so their common goal is to take down Sylar. Among this group was that creepy puppeteer that held Meredith, Claire, and Mrs. Bennett hostage earlier thisseason. Unfortunately, the creepy puppeteer doesn’t hold up so well against Sylar, who takes him out quite easily, then proceeds to inject Meredith with adrenaline, causing her powers to go on the fritz. She holed up in a cell to keep from burning the whole place down, where Noah finally found her, but Sylar should up just in time to lock the two of them in there. This is a pretty nasty fire hazard. Claire to the rescue though…she got to her father and mother just in time, and Noah came up with a plan for Meredith to superheat the bulletproof glass, then he would shoot it. That didn’t quite take, but Claire jumping through the glass…that worked pretty damn well.
Elsewhere, Daphne rushed off and snagged a sample of the formula from Mohinder’s lab at Pinehearst, and Ando took the plunge and injected himself. It was realized that he was given the ability to enhance other abilities (maybe it’s like, kinetic energy or something like that), which in turn could cause Daphne to move faster than the speed of light, thus travel through time. Together, they are able to go back in time and save Hiro, just as he was about to destroy the written formula that he stole from his father’s vault. Hiro back in the present, Ando now having an ability…I guess you can say some things definitely worked out well.
Back at Primatech, Claire and Noah return to where Claire left Angela, only to find Sylar already there set on killing her. Claire quickly takes a chunk of glass and shoves it into the back of Sylar’s head, taking him out of comission…for how long we do not know. What we do know, is that Angela knows who Sylar’s parents are, so we can expect to see him back in the next volume (actually, John Glover, who played Lex Luthor’s pops on “Smallville” has been cast as his dad, insider info). After that, Claire, Noah, and Angela double back to check on Meredith, and tells them they need to go and that she is a lost cause. Primatech is burning down, and they get the hell out of there after a solemn fair well.
At Pinehearst, Nathan walks in on Peter still trashing the lab while Mohinder is unconscious after brawling with Flint. After Nathan gives Peter a bit of a beating, Flint starts throwing flames around that cause a huge fire, the likes of which that will no doubt take down the building, similar to what happened over at Primatech. Nathan is caught in the middle of the flames, and rather than use his ability to fly the &#*% out of there, he stands there. Peter grabs a syringe and injects himself, gaining his abilities back and does what Nathan was apparently too stupid to do…fly the &#*% out of there. Granted, he goes to the trouble of saving Nathan and they land in a field, where they argue. Nathan says some harsh and unforgiveable things like, “Bro, you totally took the formula back there, and I totally wouldn’t've saved you,” and Peter fires back with, “I had to, dude, and I guess I’m just a better broski than you.” They part ways.
Mohinder, after waking in the lab from an ingestion of the formula, finds himself hitchhiking on the side of the highway, only to be picked up by Tracy. Sidenote: Is it weird that Tracy is sexier than Nikki? Maybe it’s just the whole bad girl thing, I dunno. Anyway, so these two are on the road together, and I would’ve expected them to head off in search of Nathan but this next scene makes me think that’s the last person they should go looking for…
Nathan is in a limousine with the President of the United States, I think it’s supposed to be Barack Obama, and Nathan is handing over files to him of some pretty recognizable people…Tracy, Hiro, Parkman, etc… Apparently, Nathan now thinks that rather than give people powers, all people with abilities should be rounded up and put in facilities with each other. At this point, my friends and I made really lame jokes about how we had no idea that Barack Obama was politically opposed to people with abilities…yeah, it was kind of funny. Either way, this leads straight into the next volume of “Heroes” entitled “Fugitives.”
Who would’ve thought Nathan Petrelli would turn his back on those that once called him their bro?
